HISTORY: As the sole remaining heir to the Aurelius line, Luca has long been set up for a life of importance. His father, Cyrus, having been ailing from a young age, was ultimately skipped by the Phoenix's Blessing, leaving him not only with power, but a position of influence as well. Nevertheless, Cyrus taught him love and compassion from an early age, determined to raise his son to be worthy of his nation's hopes.

The first time this backfired was at the age of seven. For months, Luca had been bringing home sick animals to nurture back to health, to varying degrees of success. Thus, when he returned home one snowy evening insisting that he found something that needed help, his father — along with their caretaker, Giselle — had no reason to suspect that he'd found anything more than a stray animal. They were all surprised when Luca took them to meet a young child, who Luca insisted was named "Kiera."

Given the heavy snows and Cyrus's own health, it was agreed that Kiera would stay with them until the Spring, at which point they could seek out their family in the city. By the time this happened, the family had come to love her as one of their own. Thus, when there was no sign of her missing family, Kiera was welcomed into their home as a member of the family.

For nearly a decade, the family lived in mostly youthful bliss. Though her health ailed for some time, Kiera eventually made a full recovery. Both they and Luca trained to become proper members of the Roostguard, Renova's armed forces. Given their prowess and standing, they were shoo-ins for their respective roles.

Not all was perfect, however. A fellow member of the Renovan Council — Augustus — had grown dissatisfied with Cyrus's politics, and had begun collaborating with outside agents, representing a joint operation with both Cataega and Castilla. Their goal was to kill Luca, which Augustus hoped would force Cyrus to resign from his position.

On Luca's seventeenth birthday, this plan was carried out. In the ensuing fracas, Cyrus leapt in front of the poisoned dagger meant for his son. With his father grieviously wounded and suffering from the slow acting poison, and with no help in sight, Luca begged for the Phoenix to have mercy and Bless his father after so many decades. The God remained silent, leaving Luca to take Cyrus's fate into his own hands.

They were found some time later, Luca's hands covered in his father's blood and his throat slit. The now sole remaining member of the Aurelius family was taken for medical attention while the city fell into chaos. He was in a state of catatonia for nearly a week, during which Augustus was slain as well.

Overwhelmed by the bloodshed, Luca told Kiera he would be leaving. When Luca awoke, Kiera was at his side. In her grief, she confessed her reason for being in the snow back in their youth. Born as a Castillan Prince, she had been instructed to spy upon the family and bring them down from the inside. Blaming herself for not noticing the actions of her own people, she promised to hunt down those responsible. Shaken though he was, Luca was still the bright-eyed boy with a bleeding heart. The violence around him terrified him, and he begged Kiera not to do it.

It was only once he secured her promise that he left Renova entirely. He blamed himself for the deaths of those around him, and was desperate to prevent the bloodshed continuing in his name. His intention was only to leave for long enough for things to settle down once more.

A year into his sojourn, he found himself on the dangerous ice of Cataega. Without realizing how thin the ice had become, he fell through and quickly lost sight of the hole he'd dropped through. With the cold sapping his strength fast, and with the despair of the last year crashing in, Luca gave up the fight.

Several hours later, he woke on the shore. The ice around him had been melted. Though confused and suspicious, he initially wrote it off as good luck, or perhaps even a well-meaning samaritan that wanted to remain anonymous. It wasn't until a few weeks later, when he was attacked within his camp late at night and stabbed through the chest, that he realized what had truly happened.

As the last remaining heir to the Phoenix's power, he was the only remaining tie the Beast had to the physical world. Thus, it had chosen to revive him repeatedly, and likely would have done so on the day of his father's death. His father's sacrifice had been in vain, and everyone that had been hurt as a result had been for nothing.

Consumed with rage and despair, Luca swore revenge not just on those that had harmed him, but the Phoenix itself. He would stop at nothing to bring the Beast down, or to at least free himself from its immortal grasp.

Over the next eight or so years, he would cross paths with the most dangerous faces in all of Domcera. Deadly Castillan assassins were nothing against his undying flame. Even when the feared Cataegan Emissaries confronted him directly, Luca crawled his way from the grave with more determination than ever. And through his efforts, he found that the attempts on his own life extended to the highest echelons of Cataegan and Castillan society. The Empress of Castilla wanted nothing more than to extinguish the fire of the Phoenix, a Beast which threatened the very lives of her own vampiric children. Meanwhile, the Queen of Cataega had set her sights on the destruction of all Beasts entirely.

Nearing his 25th year of life, Luca would learn of Castillan agents being installed within Renova's capitol itself. It was only then that Luca resolved himself to return home, now determined to figure out what plot they might have been carrying out against the nation.

PERSONALITY
ATTITUDE: Snarky, pessimistic, and guarded. Get him alone or get close to him and you'll see that this is an act meant solely to protect himself. Prior to the loss of Cyrus and everyhting that followed, Luca was known for being a bit of a brat. Not in any spoiled way, but in a "distract you while his sibling ties your shoelaces together" kind of way. He can be petulant at times, and also something of a know-it-all. The closer he is to you, the more of a gremlin he can become. This is especially true if he takes his time to unload all of his baggage.
LIKES: Pies, Books, his sister, fishing.
DISLIKES: Cakes and pastries, most alcohol, the Beasts
HOBBIES: Playing Chess, curling up with a good book, taking care of his Renovan Hawk, Polaris.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Luca is tiny, soft-spoken, and does his best to keep people at an arm's length. For the most part, he appears human, and usually tries to wear clothes with high necks in order to obscure the feathery ruff attached to his skin.

MOTIVATIONS: To purge the Phoenix from his body, to make sure no one has to suffer because of the Beasts again.

ABILITIES
POWERS:
  • Pyromancy: Able to summon flames along the length of his body. He can do some minor throwing, but it isn't like a constant flamethrower. More like "I have made this fist a fire fist now." With some strain he can extend it to weapons, but they're still gonna hurt like hell to hold.
  • Talon Transformation: Idk what to call this. He can turn his fingers into fiery slashing claws, but it takes up quite a bit of energy.
  • Regeneration: Minor wounds heal within hours, while major wounds take no more than a day and leave only faint scars. Grievous/mortal wounds can be healed rapidly, but will result in Luca losing all of his energy and passing out.
  • Immortality: The Phoenix can't keep his body if he dies of old age! ;)

WEAPONS: Rapier Broadsword. Luca switched to using a much more larger, and heavy hitting weapon. Yes it's nearly as big as he is. Don't worry about it.

SKILLS:
  • Extremely charismatic if he puts his mind to it. However, he isn't fond of talking, and is more likely to grunt at you.
  • Empathetic to a fault. He tends to grieve alongside people, even if he has never met them before in his life. Thus, he tends to keep to himself.
  • He is built for stamina over speed, and can usually keep himself going for long periods of time. However, using his abilities for too long will often weaken him.

WORLD
GEOPOLITICAL BACKGROUND: The continent of Domcera is separated into four different countries. Each of these acts in the name of a single Patron Beast. The exception to this is Venatus, a nation that not only exchanges blows with its neighbors, but also grapples with an unending eternal conflict over the twin gods that preside over them. Over the course of history, several skirmishes have broken out between each nation, namely at the behest of the Beasts that they represent.
These four nations and their Gods are:

  • Renova a lush, fertile country devoted to the Phoenix, and its ideals of rebirth and freedom.
  • Venatus, the woodland home of the Fox and the Wolf. Its many villages and towns often grapple with one another in an attempt to change the tide in favor of their god.
  • Cataega an isolated, partially submerged country in the far norths of Domcera. Its icebound cities are ruled over by the Leviathan.
  • Castilla, a country of abundant rainforests that has built its cities into the massive trees that make up their home. They live their life in service to the Butterfly.

GODS: Known colloquially as "Beasts," the divinity of Domcera have shaped the very lives that their people lead. While there have doubtless been more Beasts throughout history, only the five that yet linger are remembered within the pages of history. These Beasts are:

  • The Phoenix, a manifestation of Life, Rebirth, and Freedom. It is aligned with the elements of Fire and Air.
  • The Wolf, or Solaris, a creature of Strength and Intelligence. It is aligned with the elements of Fire, Earth, and Decay.
  • The Fox, or Lunaris, a Beast that prizes Cunning and Quickness above all else. It is aligned with Water, Earth, and Life.
  • The Leviathan is a violent Beast that values Dominion, and War. It is aligned with the elements of Water, Air, and Decay.
  • The Butterfly is the manifestation of Stasis and Natural Beauty. It is aligned with elements of Water, Earth, and Life.

THE BLESSING: It is said that at some point in history, the Beasts realized that their own wars would destroy those that they ruled over. In the interest of preserving the continent, the Beasts began offering fragments of their power to Humans. With this Blessing, humans were able to carry on their war by Proxy.
The strength of a Blessing is determined by how widespread that Blessing has become. The Butterfly grants the entire nobility of Castilla with her eternal life and unsatiable thirst. Thus, its Blessing might be considered weaker than that of the Wolf, who chooses only particular souls to represent her in her war.
The abilities granted by each Beast are as follows:

  • The Phoenix: The power to manifest and manipulate flame. Wounds heal substantially quicker. This Blessing was limited exclusively to the once abundant Aurelius line.
  • The Wolf: The ability to transform into a wolf beneath the moon. Control of this ability is learned, rather than innate, and so many young Blessed are forced into this form under a full moon.
  • The Fox: The ability to transform, at will, to a specific forest creature.
  • The Leviathan: Unknown. For many centuries, it was believed that the Leviathan did not grant a blessing. Only in recent years have rumors risen about the Queen's Emissaries — a small handful of Blessed that work as the Queen's hands abroad. Elusive as these Emissaries are, it's not known what powers they hold.
  • The Butterfly: Immortality, though at the cost of subsisting solely on Blood. This functional immortality can be spread via reproduction. As far as most know, this cannot be spread to an already living creature. These Blessed are also capable of limited transformations, though each must be learned.

MAGICAL TALENT: While a Blessing is said to be the greatest gift of all, it is not the only way to manifest elemental magic. The average human, with enough attunement to the elements around them, can learn to cast magic. While a human can ostensibly attune with any amount of elements, their magic will never be as powerful as those with a Natural Blessing.
The stronger a Blessing, the less likely it is to be able attune with any other element. The Aurelius line, for example, has never been seen casting any other magic other than that of flame. Conversely, the widespread Blessing of the Butterfly allows her disciples to often attune with one or two elements.

ELEMENTS: The natural world is made up of just six elements. However, each of these elements can be broken into categories of their own. Thus, while each Beast may share an elemental alignment with another, their manifestation of that element is entirely different.
  • Fire: While the Phoenix might focus on true flame, the Wolf finds her magic manifested in the form heat.
  • Water: The Leviathan's strength in this element is found in Ice, whereas the Butterfly is able to control the life energy of another being. The Fox, meanwhile, governs the flow of water and the tides themselves.
  • Air: The Phoenix promotes flight, though an Aurelius hasn't been seen flying in generations. The Leviathan, on the other hand, extends its elemental will in the form of fierce storms.
  • Earth: Both the Fox and the Wolf extend their will over stone and rock. The Butterfly on the other hand, maintains control over plants and nature.
  • Life: The Fox promotes the gentle healing of wounds, while the Butterfly promotes longevity and the extension of life itself.
  • Decay: While the Wolf extends her will in the form of organic death and rot, the Leviathan is an arbiter of destruction and war itself.
It is thought that, as a result of either its weakening line or the Beast's weakness itself, the Phoenix has lost its control over another element, leaving it as the only Beast with two elements to call its own.
