ORIGINS: Born in Renovan Capitol of Aerea.

OCCUPATION: Professional Runaway, Former Noble Heir, Current Bearer of the Phoenix Blessing

HISTORY: As the sole remaining heir to the Aurelius line, Luca has long been set up for a life of importance. His father, Cyrus, having been ailing from a young age, was ultimately skipped by the Phoenix's Blessing, leaving him not only with power, but a position of influence as well. Nevertheless, Cyrus taught him love and compassion from an early age, determined to raise his son to be worthy of his nation's hopes.

The first time this backfired was at the age of seven. For months, Luca had been bringing home sick animals to nurture back to health, to varying degrees of success. Thus, when he returned home one snowy evening insisting that he found something that needed help, his father — along with their caretaker, Giselle — had no reason to suspect that he'd found anything more than a stray animal. They were all surprised when Luca took them to meet a young child, who Luca insisted was named "Kiera."

Given the heavy snows and Cyrus's own health, it was agreed that Kiera would stay with them until the Spring, at which point they could seek out their family in the city. By the time this happened, the family had come to love her as one of their own. Thus, when there was no sign of her missing family, Kiera was welcomed into their home as a member of the family.

For nearly a decade, the family lived in mostly youthful bliss. Though her health ailed for some time, Kiera eventually made a full recovery. Both they and Luca trained to become proper members of the Roostguard, Renova's armed forces. Given their prowess and standing, they were shoo-ins for their respective roles.

Not all was perfect, however. A fellow member of the Renovan Council — Augustus — had grown dissatisfied with Cyrus's politics, and had begun collaborating with outside agents, representing a joint operation with both Cataega and Castilla. Their goal was to kill Luca, which Augustus hoped would force Cyrus to resign from his position.

On Luca's seventeenth birthday, this plan was carried out. In the ensuing fracas, Cyrus leapt in front of the poisoned dagger meant for his son. With his father grieviously wounded and suffering from the slow acting poison, and with no help in sight, Luca begged for the Phoenix to have mercy and Bless his father after so many decades. The God remained silent, leaving Luca to take Cyrus's fate into his own hands.

They were found some time later, Luca's hands covered in his father's blood and his throat slit. The now sole remaining member of the Aurelius family was taken for medical attention while the city fell into chaos. He was in a state of catatonia for nearly a week, during which Augustus was slain as well.

Overwhelmed by the bloodshed, Luca told Kiera he would be leaving. When Luca awoke, Kiera was at his side. In her grief, she confessed her reason for being in the snow back in their youth. Born as a Castillan Prince, she had been instructed to spy upon the family and bring them down from the inside. Blaming herself for not noticing the actions of her own people, she promised to hunt down those responsible. Shaken though he was, Luca was still the bright-eyed boy with a bleeding heart. The violence around him terrified him, and he begged Kiera not to do it.

It was only once he secured her promise that he left Renova entirely. He blamed himself for the deaths of those around him, and was desperate to prevent the bloodshed continuing in his name. His intention was only to leave for long enough for things to settle down once more.

A year into his sojourn, he found himself on the dangerous ice of Cataega. Without realizing how thin the ice had become, he fell through and quickly lost sight of the hole he'd dropped through. With the cold sapping his strength fast, and with the despair of the last year crashing in, Luca gave up the fight.

Several hours later, he woke on the shore. The ice around him had been melted. Though confused and suspicious, he initially wrote it off as good luck, or perhaps even a well-meaning samaritan that wanted to remain anonymous. It wasn't until a few weeks later, when he was attacked within his camp late at night and stabbed through the chest, that he realized what had truly happened.

As the last remaining heir to the Phoenix's power, he was the only remaining tie the Beast had to the physical world. Thus, it had chosen to revive him repeatedly, and likely would have done so on the day of his father's death. His father's sacrifice had been in vain, and everyone that had been hurt as a result had been for nothing.

Consumed with rage and despair, Luca swore revenge not just on those that had harmed him, but the Phoenix itself. He would stop at nothing to bring the Beast down, or to at least free himself from its immortal grasp.

Over the next eight or so years, he would cross paths with the most dangerous faces in all of Domcera. Deadly Castillan assassins were nothing against his undying flame. Even when the feared Cataegan Emissaries confronted him directly, Luca crawled his way from the grave with more determination than ever. And through his efforts, he found that the attempts on his own life extended to the highest echelons of Cataegan and Castillan society. The Empress of Castilla wanted nothing more than to extinguish the fire of the Phoenix, a Beast which threatened the very lives of her own vampiric children. Meanwhile, the Queen of Cataega had set her sights on the destruction of all Beasts entirely.

Nearing his 25th year of life, Luca would learn of Castillan agents being installed within Renova's capitol itself. It was only then that Luca resolved himself to return home, now determined to figure out what plot they might have been carrying out against the nation.

PERSONALITY
ATTITUDE: Snarky, pessimistic, and guarded. Get him alone or get close to him and you'll see that this is an act meant solely to protect himself. Prior to the loss of Cyrus and everyhting that followed, Luca was known for being a bit of a brat. Not in any spoiled way, but in a "distract you while his sibling ties your shoelaces together" kind of way. He can be petulant at times, and also something of a know-it-all. The closer he is to you, the more of a gremlin he can become. This is especially true if he takes his time to unload all of his baggage.
LIKES: Pies, Books, his sister, fishing.
DISLIKES: Cakes and pastries, most alcohol, the Beasts
HOBBIES: Playing Chess, curling up with a good book, taking care of his Renovan Hawk, Polaris.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Luca is tiny, soft-spoken, and does his best to keep people at an arm's length. For the most part, he appears human, and usually tries to wear clothes with high necks in order to obscure the feathery ruff attached to his skin.

MOTIVATIONS: To purge the Phoenix from his body, to make sure no one has to suffer because of the Beasts again.

ABILITIES
POWERS:
  • Pyromancy: Able to summon flames along the length of his body. He can do some minor throwing, but it isn't like a constant flamethrower. More like "I have made this fist a fire fist now." With some strain he can extend it to weapons, but they're still gonna hurt like hell to hold.
  • Talon Transformation: Idk what to call this. He can turn his fingers into fiery slashing claws, but it takes up quite a bit of energy.
  • Regeneration: Minor wounds heal within hours, while major wounds take no more than a day and leave only faint scars. Grievous/mortal wounds can be healed rapidly, but will result in Luca losing all of his energy and passing out.
  • Immortality: The Phoenix can't keep his body if he dies of old age! ;)

WEAPONS: Rapier Broadsword. Luca switched to using a much more larger, and heavy hitting weapon. Yes it's nearly as big as he is. Don't worry about it.

SKILLS:
  • Extremely charismatic if he puts his mind to it. However, he isn't fond of talking, and is more likely to grunt at you.
  • Empathetic to a fault. He tends to grieve alongside people, even if he has never met them before in his life. Thus, he tends to keep to himself.
  • He is built for stamina over speed, and can usually keep himself going for long periods of time. However, using his abilities for too long will often weaken him.

WORLD
GEOPOLITICAL BACKGROUND: The continent of Domcera is separated into four different countries. Each of these acts in the name of a single Patron Beast. The exception to this is Venatus, a nation that not only exchanges blows with its neighbors, but also grapples with an unending eternal conflict over the twin gods that preside over them. Over the course of history, several skirmishes have broken out between each nation, namely at the behest of the Beasts that they represent.
These four nations and their Gods are:

  • Renova a lush, fertile country devoted to the Phoenix, and its ideals of rebirth and freedom.
  • Venatus, the woodland home of the Fox and the Wolf. Its many villages and towns often grapple with one another in an attempt to change the tide in favor of their god.
  • Cataega an isolated, partially submerged country in the far norths of Domcera. Its icebound cities are ruled over by the Leviathan.
  • Castilla, a country of abundant rainforests that has built its cities into the massive trees that make up their home. They live their life in service to the Butterfly.

GODS: Known colloquially as "Beasts," the divinity of Domcera have shaped the very lives that their people lead. While there have doubtless been more Beasts throughout history, only the five that yet linger are remembered within the pages of history. These Beasts are:

  • The Phoenix, a manifestation of Life, Rebirth, and Freedom. It is aligned with the elements of Fire and Air.
  • The Wolf, or Solaris, a creature of Strength and Intelligence. It is aligned with the elements of Fire, Earth, and Decay.
  • The Fox, or Lunaris, a Beast that prizes Cunning and Quickness above all else. It is aligned with Water, Earth, and Life.
  • The Leviathan is a violent Beast that values Dominion, and War. It is aligned with the elements of Water, Air, and Decay.
  • The Butterfly is the manifestation of Stasis and Natural Beauty. It is aligned with elements of Water, Earth, and Life.

THE BLESSING: It is said that at some point in history, the Beasts realized that their own wars would destroy those that they ruled over. In the interest of preserving the continent, the Beasts began offering fragments of their power to Humans. With this Blessing, humans were able to carry on their war by Proxy.
The strength of a Blessing is determined by how widespread that Blessing has become. The Butterfly grants the entire nobility of Castilla with her eternal life and unsatiable thirst. Thus, its Blessing might be considered weaker than that of the Wolf, who chooses only particular souls to represent her in her war.
The abilities granted by each Beast are as follows:

  • The Phoenix: The power to manifest and manipulate flame. Wounds heal substantially quicker. This Blessing was limited exclusively to the once abundant Aurelius line.
  • The Wolf: The ability to transform into a wolf beneath the moon. Control of this ability is learned, rather than innate, and so many young Blessed are forced into this form under a full moon.
  • The Fox: The ability to transform, at will, to a specific forest creature.
  • The Leviathan: Unknown. For many centuries, it was believed that the Leviathan did not grant a blessing. Only in recent years have rumors risen about the Queen's Emissaries — a small handful of Blessed that work as the Queen's hands abroad. Elusive as these Emissaries are, it's not known what powers they hold.
  • The Butterfly: Immortality, though at the cost of subsisting solely on Blood. This functional immortality can be spread via reproduction. As far as most know, this cannot be spread to an already living creature. These Blessed are also capable of limited transformations, though each must be learned.

MAGICAL TALENT: While a Blessing is said to be the greatest gift of all, it is not the only way to manifest elemental magic. The average human, with enough attunement to the elements around them, can learn to cast magic. While a human can ostensibly attune with any amount of elements, their magic will never be as powerful as those with a Natural Blessing.
The stronger a Blessing, the less likely it is to be able attune with any other element. The Aurelius line, for example, has never been seen casting any other magic other than that of flame. Conversely, the widespread Blessing of the Butterfly allows her disciples to often attune with one or two elements.

ELEMENTS: The natural world is made up of just six elements. However, each of these elements can be broken into categories of their own. Thus, while each Beast may share an elemental alignment with another, their manifestation of that element is entirely different.
  • Fire: While the Phoenix might focus on true flame, the Wolf finds her magic manifested in the form heat.
  • Water: The Leviathan's strength in this element is found in Ice, whereas the Butterfly is able to control the life energy of another being. The Fox, meanwhile, governs the flow of water and the tides themselves.
  • Air: The Phoenix promotes flight, though an Aurelius hasn't been seen flying in generations. The Leviathan, on the other hand, extends its elemental will in the form of fierce storms.
  • Earth: Both the Fox and the Wolf extend their will over stone and rock. The Butterfly on the other hand, maintains control over plants and nature.
  • Life: The Fox promotes the gentle healing of wounds, while the Butterfly promotes longevity and the extension of life itself.
  • Decay: While the Wolf extends her will in the form of organic death and rot, the Leviathan is an arbiter of destruction and war itself.
It is thought that, as a result of either its weakening line or the Beast's weakness itself, the Phoenix has lost its control over another element, leaving it as the only Beast with two elements to call its own.

As its name might imply, the Watchtower bar is made from a repurposed old Watchtower from Luca's home. new buildingfirst floor has plenty of tables at hand, all arranged around a central hearth with various pots of food and snacks left to simmer above it. The bar itself is arranged against the back wall, with additional stools to accommodate patrons in need of more direct service. Casks of wine, beer, cider, and ale are all arranged along the wall, while bottles of the harder stuff are sat above.

There is a single sign in front of the bar. There are age limits for drinking around here, you see, and he's content to make those quite clear. 15 or up for Cider and Wine. 18 or older for hard liquor. You can try your luck at lying to him, of course!

Visible from the first floor is the second. The lofted seating area provides the perfect view for the revelry below, all while staying out of sight. There are plenty more tables up here, though they’re more spaced out to provide slightly more intimate conversations. You might just have to be the one to fetch your drinks— there are no barmaids to help you here.

Though, if you're lucky, your drink might somehow refill itself. Surely you've seen him out of the corner of your eye, that odd spirit that almost looks like Luca. He always seems to have the right drink on hand, but only if the proprietor seems occupied.

Naturally, the liquor will flow, especially as long as you’re providing currency. Luca isn’t all that picky — shells, sticks, bones, it’s all the same. The food, at least, is free. Whether you reach for the cheese and crackers laid out on various tables throughout the bar, choose to ladle out some of the stew simmering over a fire, or pour some of the fondue beside it, you’ll have plenty at hand to satisfy your munchies.

One table in particular features a deck of cards. There’s no game in particular to be played, and any money you decide to put on the line is your choice. Poker, Blackjack, Rummy — whatever suits your fancy is on hand. Or if you feel like hogging the table, play some solitaire. Luca isn’t going to shoo you away.

Close by, another table has been pulled away. A somewhat messily carved dartboard has been hung against the wall. Rather than actual darts, you’ll have to play with knives but… that’s just part of the fun, right?

One final table is adorned only with a single jug. Peering in, you’ll find that it’s filled with wine, and the faintest compulsion to just drink it. Doing so without any prep will only result in disaster, however. Failing to plug up three specific holes and angle the jug just right will result in your clothes being stained with wine. Worse still, you might even hear a whisper in your ear. “Take two shots.”

Should you find yourself alone at the bar, you might experience something strange.

There’s the sound of a whistle as a chair scrapes its way back into place. The smell of tobacco and spices might encircle you as your plate and glass are gathered up and carried off into the storeroom. You can’t always see him, but someone seems keen on looking out for you.

Unless you’re passed out in a ridiculous position. Then you might hear the ghostly laughter of a man long dead.

Going up to the third floor is a no-go, as that's Luca's room. However, if you find yourself transported up there for... whatever reason, it will not be accessible from the outside by any means, including jumping out the window, and the world will look like you noclipped over the top of the map when looking out the window. Probably not an issue.

Maybe I'll make this look better later but for now -

    Nerfs and other Notes
    - As with general healing powers in this game go, Luca's healing won't be able to instantaneously heal him, even with the Phoenix's help
    - Immortality? what immortality it's gone-
-Phoenix voice is muffled, sort of like talking to someone when you're two rooms away kind of dealio

    CHARACTER INFO

    Name: Luca Aurelius
    Canon: OC
Canon Point: Shortly after his return to Renova
    Age: Almost 25
Species: Blessed Human (Human with Phoenix Traits)

History: From a young age, it was clear that Luca — the sole remaining heir to the Blessing of the Phoenix — was destined for power and responsibility. His father, Cyrus (who had been skipped by the Phoenix due to his own poor constitution) thus chose to raise his son with compassion, determined to ensure his son was prepared to meet the harshness of the world with kindness.

The first time this backfired was at the age of seven when Luca, who had spent months bringing sick animals home to nurture, brought home a child instead. Given the heavy snows and Cyrus's own health, it was agreed that the child, Kiera, would stay with them until the Spring, at which point they could seek out their family in the city — by the time this came to pass, however, Luca, his father, and their caretaker had come to love her as one of their own, and thus welcomed her into the Aurelius family.

For nearly a decade, the family lived in mostly youthful bliss, though unbeknownst to them, a fellow member of the Renovan Council (Augustus Caelius), had grown dissatisfied with Cyrus’s politics and had begun collaborating with outside agents in order to bring the family to its knees. On Luca's seventeenth birthday, this plan was carried out, ending with Cyrus leaping in front of the poisoned dagger meant for his son. Luca begged the Phoenix to Bless his father and keep him alive, but was ignored, leading him to take matters into his own hands; he would be found later in a catatonic state (which he would remain in for nearly a week), still clutching the dagger.

When Luca woke, Kiera confessed the truth of their own origins: born as a Castillan Prince and intended to be a spy, they.blamed themself for not noticing the actions of her own people and promised to hunt down those responsible, much to his horror. Shaken though he was, Luca was still the bright-eyed boy with a bleeding heart, and he begged his sister not to do it; only once this promise was secured did Luca leave Renova entirely, having blamed himself for the deaths and other actions taken by those around him.

Initially, Luca had only intended to leave long enough to allow things to settle — however, a year into his sojourn, he suffered an accident and nearly drowned within the frozen waters of Cataega. Several hours after the incident, he woke on the shore, with the ice around him entirely melted, all of which he initially attributed to good luck or a kind hearted stranger. It wasn’t until several weeks later, when he was attacked in his camp and stabbed in the chest that he realized the truth — as the last remaining heir to the Phoenix's power, he was the only remaining tie the Beast had to the physical world.

Realizing that his father’s death had been for naught due to this ability, Luca became consumed with rage and despair, and promptly swore revenge not just on those that had harmed him, but the Phoenix itself.

Over the next eight or so years, he would cross paths with the most dangerous faces in all of Domcera — including Castillan assassins and the feared Cataegan Emissaries — and from them would learn just how far the conspiracy against his life went. He would also learn of Cataegan agents being installed within Renova’s Capitol itself, and became determined to return home to put things right, no matter the cost.

    Personality:

✽ What is your character's main motivation? What drives them and keeps them going?

The belief that one day, he won't have to keep fighting. He's been through hell and back, never mind been killed multiple times, under the belief that he's close to finding a way to die permanently. It's why he's faced some of the most dangerous entities in the world, the Cataegan Emissaries, who possess the power and might of the most fearsome of Beasts -- the leviathan. His repeated dealings with one of them in particular, Alazon, has been with the hope that their organization would be able to purge the Phoenix entirely. In his eyes, this is the only way to be free, and if he has to continue to haunt the earth, he'll do so solely to find a way to bring the Phoenix down for all it's done.

✽ What is their biggest regret? Why?

The needless death of his father weighs heavy on Luca's soul. Nearly every day, he feels the weight of the knife in his hand and hears the pained gurgles of his dying dad. He's replayed what happened over and over again within his head, wishing he'd somehow taken the knife and then been pulled back from the brink.

✽ What is their worst fear? Their greatest comfort?

Luca's greatest fear is the idea of living forever beneath the Phoenix's claws. He's tried many, many times to break free of his own accord (often at the cost of his own life), and failed each and every time as a result. As a result, the Phoenix has grown more spiteful, often leaving Luca partially injured or causing him pain. The idea of living his life like that for all eternity is a terrifying one for him.

In theory, family is his greatest comfort. They've always supported him and held him up. If, he were to turn to them, then they would surely understand his struggle and lend an aid to him. However, he refuses to allow himself this comfort, believing that his family and friends, all who have worshipped the Phoenix their entire lives, would turn their back on him as he condemned their beloved deity.

    ✽ Top three strengths?
-Resilience/Physical training- Forced or otherwise, Luca can take hits and devastating blows both physically and emotionally without succumbing to the burden. This is in addition to the work he did as a trainee knight, which taught him not only how to take said blows, but how to fight back.
-Survivalism- Distinctly different than the above, in that he has trained himself to survive in the many climates of the world. He may not like the cold, but he's learned the best ways to get by in the harsh northern winters, as well as the extremely hot and humid climes of the southern rainforests.
-Compassion- Though he would deny it to his last, the soft-hearted boy who spent his youth rescuing injured animals is still in there. He's been beaten back by circumstance, but he still lingers.

    ✽ Top three weaknesses?
-Water/Ice- Though he is more than capable of swimming and surviving the cold, when it comes to these specific magics, Luca is often bested (if not outright weakened) and has to rely on brute strength.
-Distrust - Though healthy to a degree, having had his faith shaken to the very core has left Luca quick to jump at the slightest provocation. Strangers are met with cold gazes, while even family is doubted at their very word. It takes a lot to convince Luca to let down his guard, even from those who have never done anything to him or have even provided him aid.
-Isolation - Despite having chose this life willingly, Luca spent the better part of his life being loved and loving others. Being alone and fighting his own battles is not his natural proclivity, and despite insisting otherwise, he struggles with this daily.

✽ What was their last lie?

"The boy you loved is dead."

Inventory: +Broadsword: A weapon nearly Luca’s height when accounting for blade, pommel, and hilt. It seems far too large and inelegant for the man who wields it.
+Polaris. A Renovan hawk with ruddy brown plumage that often looks red within the sun. She has been trained in delivering messages to friends and dead mice to Luca (thanks Kiera).

    Abilities:
    • Immortality: The Phoenix can't keep his body if he dies of old age! ;)
    • The Phoenix: Though not an ability in and of itself, Luca maintains a psychic connection with his Patron Beast, the Phoenix. Unlike other Beasts, who give a fraction of their power to their Blessed, strange circumstances require that the Phoenix lend its entire self to its Blessed. Thus, it is able to communicate telepathically with Luca, and even extend some influence of whether or not his powers even work. It’s been known to punish Luca by not healing his wounds.
